New Media Broadcasting- The Duties of an “Essential Employee” throughout COVID-19

By: Sydney Alexis Phillips

Due to the outbreak of the COVID19 Pandemic, many business’ have been temporarily shut down and all “non-essential employees” have been ordered to stay at home, in attempt to decrease the spread of the virus. This is being enacted at both the Federal and Local government levels to help ensure the safety of “high risk” and elderly individuals; more information can be found per Whitehouse.gov.

When you first think of the words: “essential workers” during a global pandemic, what comes to mind first? Surely, healthcare professionals will be at the top of the list! Most likely followed by grocery store employees and the truck drivers that will ensure they have goods to stock stores with.

Oddly enough, most people probably wouldn’t think to mention the Media, i.e. the journalists responsible for covering breaking stories they’ll want to keep up with. But the good news for them is- we’ve made the list! Check it out, in Fortune Magazine.

This authorization includes WZAA 106.9 LPFM, a local streaming television and radio station located in Jeffersonville, Ohio. Providing weekly broadcast coverage in the areas of politics, sports, entertainment, and current events (both on the local and national spectrum).

Although our office is allowed to remain open, we must follow the guideline and regulations set by the Ohio Department of Health such as: “having minimal employees working in the office at a time, implementing teleworking/ video conferencing, and encouraging sick employees to stay home”.

During this week’s video broadcast of “Sports Planet” hosted by Bill Hrabak (whom attended in person), Tony Mancuso (who joined the broadcast via phone conference), and CEO Rick Phillips (who ran the graphics and soundboard) streamed via WZAA 106.9 LPFM on April 2, 2020.

After the stream concluded, I took a few minutes to speak to the CEO of WZAA about why he chooses their production technique, of streaming both news and entertainment content.

“During these challenging times we continue to do our news, politics and sports broadcasts because we feel it gives our audience a semblance of stability they cannot get from other aspects of their lives” Rick Phillips said.

While the potential impact of a physically harmful virus remains looming, remaining mentally healthy is just as pertinent. Attached is an article from the CDC, about the importance of how to properly “cope with stress during crisis situations” such as COVID19. It goes into further detail about how fear and anxiety can worsen existing physical health conditions, and whom may be at higher risk to become depressed.

This is an extremely difficult time for everyone. Not just because we may be low on funds, or worried about getting sick-but because we are approaching the unknown. As of yet, COVID19 is a Global Pandemic of uncharted territory just waiting to be mapped out.

For now, the best we can do is work towards the common goal of “flattening the curve” through social distancing. Enjoy time at home, watch some live or archived streams of Sports Planet on WZAA 106.9 LPFM, or check us out on Facebook! Feel free to shoot us a message on what our next “show topic” should be.
